Midweek ride to Thornbury Animal Sanctuary

7 cyclists met at Tickhill CC, namely, Robin, Kevin, Michelle, Linda, Karen, Sharon and Trisha.

We set off fairly promptly just after 9 am and cycled 20 ft when Sharon discovered she had a battery problem with her gear changing mechanism so unfortunately had to abort her ride. Just before reaching the Buttercross l suddenly came to a grinding halt on my bike as my new saddlebag was preventing my rear wheel from turning.

Kevin and I spent a good 15 minutes trying to resolve the problem. We eventually managed to sort it out and set off on the ride to Thornbury Animal Sanctuary Cafe 22.5 miles away. We had no more incidents after that and made good progress to Serlby, Ranskill, Torworth and Blyth.

We had a 2 mile section on the busy B 6046 road heading into a south westerly wind and all were relieved to turn off on reaching the Fifty Acre Wood to join the road leading to Carlton in Lindrick. Here we changed direction and encountered the head wind once again as we headed to Woodsetts and North Anston. Some of the group were becoming a bit tired so it was decided that we stopped at the Butterfly Farm and had refreshments at Lottie's Cafe after cycling 20.5 miles. We sat outside for 30 minutes and all enjoyed our refreshments and we were raring to go again on our 12.25 mile return ride.

We headed into North Aston and eventually turned north with a helpful tail wind to Laughton and onto a superb narrow road passing Kings Wood with wonderful views whilst heading towards Firebeck. Thornbury Hill Lane was tackled easily by all and a speedy finish completed an excellent ride back into Tickhill.

Thank you all for your great company.
