Lindsy James and John Brearley were fastest at the Tickhill Velo 10-mile time trial in South Yorkshire on Saturday afternoon.
Despite forecasts of rain there was a three-hour window so all competitors had a dry ride, justifying the organisers’ decision to go ahead after wondering about cancelling earlier in the weekend.
Brearley (ADDFORM-Vive le Velo) covered the course near Hatfield Woodhouse in 20-35 to take the win by 27 seconds from Mark Wolstenholme (VTTA Yorkshire), with Ian GUilor (Mapperley CC) just three seconds further off the pace in third spot.
The promoting club’s own Lynsy James (Tickhill Velo Club) was fastest female in 24-08, 13 seconds better than Selby CC rival Beth Grogan, while third was Angela Hannon-Flaherty (Seacroft Wheelers) with 24-56 and in the women’s road bike category it was Lisa Miles (ABC Centreville) who took the win, her time of 29-52 being 57 seconds better than Jenny Down (Tickhill Velo).
The event used the O10/1 course to the east of Doncaster, starting south of Hatfield Woodhouse village and heading down the A614 to Blaxton before turning and heading back north.
This was John Brearley’s third open time trial win of the season so far, with his others coming back at the start of the season when he was victorious at the City RC two-up 25 alongside David Brearley, as well as the Birdwell Wheelers 10 on this same Hatfield Woodhouse course, where he clocked 20-20 back in April.
There was also a good entry for the road bike category, with Duncan Putman (Derby Mercury RC) clocking 23-20 to win by 1-02 from Chris Dyke (Team Lifting Gear Products) with third being Kevin Sayles (Barton Wheelers) with 26-44.
The event raised money for Tickhill Velo’s chosen beneficiary Paul Bentham, a good friend of the club who suffered a debilitating stroke which has left his family with considerable costs in adapting their home to allow for Paul’s care. Thanks go to all who donated.
