What our members say

Tickhill velo Cycling Club is a community of passionate cyclists, see what some of them have to say about the club and our rides.

"Having done a few spin classes and been out riding on my hybrid bike that I had bought through the cycle to work scheme, one of the girls at the gym told me about TVC. Whilst I really wanted to give it a go, I hate new situations! I also had no idea if I could keep up, I didn’t have a ‘racing’ bike, convinced myself I would fall off if I tried cleats and that I would knock everyone else off if we had to ride in a bunch, and then there was the issue of wearing Lycra...

That said, I started to warm to the idea. I decided to turn up, give it a go on the basis that nobody knew me and if I made a fool of myself, I just wouldn’t go back. That was four years ago. I loved it, everyone was chatty, encouraging, they waited for me, I felt welcome and included. I’ve now got that bike, and the cleats.  I’m not much faster but that really doesn’t matter.  I Made some good Sunday friends, and even ended up marrying one of them! Joining TVC really did change my life!"

"Tickhill Velo was recommended by a friend as a welcoming, social, friendly, non-competitive cycling club, the additional attraction was the area around Tickhill has a lot fewer hills than where I live - bonus.

The rides tend to be 40ish miles with a café stop, which is a great opportunity to have a chat, laugh and catch up with everyone, enjoy a beverage with a scone/cake/beans on toast/ or, in some cases, all three. The red ride also has an unofficial ‘scone-ometer’ classification based on moistness, crumb texture and quality of jam & cream. The routes are different each week, with guest ride leaders planning new routes, therefore there is a good cross section of cafes to sample and score.

I enjoy the feature rides out to the Peak District (I’ve yet to attempt Winnats), longer rides to the Humber Bridge (and back) and 200 miles on the Scarborough charity weekend ride. I also like the local sportives we support as a club, it’s really great to the ‘magenta massif’ out in force.

Personally I like the banter, friendliness, encouragement and supportive atmosphere that TVC and its members provide. I went from being able to cycle 20 miles to enjoying much longer, more challenging rides."

"I’ve been a member of Tickhill Velo since it first started . What I found appealing was its commitment to being a welcoming and friendly club and that’s the way it has remained.

It caters for all capabilities and organises a faster and a slower ride each weekend. We make sure no one is left behind and the ride leaders are very focussed on safety . And of course every ride includes an obligatory cafe stop with multiple coffee and cake opportunities."

"I love cycling and when my friend told me about Tickhill Velo cycling club of which she is a member, I went along to find out what it was like cycling with a group. I enjoyed it and found I got the support and encouragement from the other cyclists to improve my cycling ability and confidence.

I enjoy the different routes we go on and especially trying out new cafe stops, cycling around our lovely countryside with great company, making new friends, chatting over coffee and cakes or bacon butties, come along and find out for yourselves."

"I was a keen Mountain Cyclist but following a serious accident while out on my own, I decided to join my local road cycling club. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with them and was a bit nervous to ride with a group, However, I was really well looked after by the other club members.

I have now been riding with Tickhill Velo for about 5 years and I always look forward to our weekend rides. We now have 3 different riding groups to choose from depending on the pace and distance you want to do.

Riding in a group is an amazing experience and I feel much safer than riding solo.

Once a month there is a feature ride that is always interesting.

I recommend anyone of any ability to join our great and friendly club, but be careful, you are very likely to catch the cycling bug!"
